Named Scholarships

University of Nigeria, Nsukka — U.S. Alumni Association

Nine donors. One new student every year, since 2023.

UNN-USA connects alumni across the United States directly to students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Each sponsor is anchored to one department and issues a one-time grant to a new student each year — so every donor’s giving history is really a small roster of students, not a single relationship.

The Nine Donor Rosters

Each donor's grant history, year by year

No sponsorship here carries over every donor funds a one-time grant to a new student in their department each year. That makes each donor’s real record a short roster, not a single name.

How It Works

Why UNN-USA funds one-time grants, not multi-year scholarships

Most scholarship programs commit a sponsor to one student for the length of a degree. UNN-USA is built differently: each donor is anchored to a single department, and issues a fresh, one-time grant to a new student in that department every year.

That means the real record of a donor’s giving isn’t one name — it’s a roster. Dr. Chinedu Okafor hasn’t sponsored one Medicine & Surgery student since 2023; he’s sponsored four, one per year. Spreading grants this way lets each donor reach more students over time, and keeps a lapse in one student’s studies from ending a donor’s relationship with the department.

Departments are deliberately kept distinct across the nine donors Medicine, Law, and Agricultural Economics draw from very different applicant pools so support doesn’t concentrate in any one faculty. The rosters above represent every grant UNN-USA has issued since the program began.

Become a sponsor

Each new sponsor is paired with one outstanding student in the department annually. Recipients are typically in their final year of study, when financial demands are often greatest. Your sponsorship helps ease the cost of their final-year project and other essential academic expenses, enabling them to focus on completing their studies successfully and achieving their full potential. New sponsors are matched to an incoming student in a department not yet represented, or to a continuing student whose current sponsor has stepped back. Commitments are made one academic session at a time.
